Induced Changes in Female Germ Cells of Drosophila. VI. the Effect of Dehydration upon the X-Ray-Induced Frequencies of Crossover-like Exchanges and of Gross Chromosomal Rearrangements.

چکیده
EHYDRATION of Drosophila melanogaster virgin females before irradiaD tion increases the frequency of mortality for eggs laid approximately the first eight days after mating (HERSKOWITZ 1957). No decision was reached from this work as to whether or not the dehydration-increased egg mortality had a genetic basis. The present experiments aimed to test whether X-ray-induced frequencies of gross chromosomal rearrangements and of crossover-like exchanges are modified by maternal dehydration prior to irradiation. The findings are discussed in relation to those from the earlier study on dehydrationdependent egg mortality. Part of these results have been summarized elsewhere (HERSKOWITZ 1956).

HILE a number of investigators had previously reported that dehydrated seeds and pollen have lower frequencies of X-ray-induced point mutations and chromosomal rearrangements than hydrated ones, CALDECOTT (1954, 1955) found for X-rayed barley seeds that when the water content of the embryo decreased, the inhibition of seedling growth and the frequency of chromosomal rearrangements increased (se...

OME of the earlier papers in this series (HERSKOWITZ and ABRAHAMSON 1957; S H ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 1959) were concerned with the detection of X-ray-induced exchanges in germ cells of female Drosophila melanogaster. It was found in the proximal portion of the X chromosome, i.e., the region between the right end of the chromosome and the locus of carnation, that X-ray exposure induced exchanges both...

Aims: More people, for occupational and therapeutic purposes, is exposed to its harmful effects including chromosomal abnormalities every day. Radioprotective agents are able to reduce these kinds of damages through mechanisms such as free radical scavenging, donating hydrogen to damaged molecules and increasing activity of antioxidant enzymes. Medicinal plants which have been traditionally use...
متن کاملInduced Changes in Female Germ Cells of Drosophila. I. Dependence of Half-Translocation Frequency upon X-Ray Delivery Rate.
T HAS BEEN definitely established for X-ray-induced mutations in plants that I lowering the intensity of treatment causes a decrease in the number of chromosoma1 rearrangements obtained (SAX 1939a,b, 1940, 1941; SAX and BRUMFIELD 1943). This observation could result from either or both a necessity for several “units” of X-rays to accumulate in order to produce a break (and as the rate of delive...

A better understanding of the mechanism of chromosomal aberration formation could be obtained by using DNA repair inhibitors. Immortalized normal human (MRC 5 SVI) and ataxia telangiectasia ( AT 5 BIV A ) fibroblastic cell lines were treated with adenosine arabinoside (ara-A) and cytosine arabinoside (ara-C), both potent inhibitors of DNA dsb repair, alone or in combination with x-rays at ...
